Central Maine Healthcare has purchased the vacant St. Joseph’s Church in Lewiston for $125,000. It plans to tear down the 156-year-old church, closed since October 2009, and turn it into a parking lot.
Chuck Gill, the hospital’s spokesman, told the Sun Journal the church is in poor condition and not worth renovating. The building has been deconsecrated, the newspaper reported.
Gill says the parking lot will have 50 to 60 spaces to accommodate hospital employees. He said the health care group will likely install a historical marker on the site.
