Children’s Home builds out new Family Center in Waterville

Maine Children’s Home will be opening a new family center in the Waterville campus’s Lunder Building, which is under renovation by Winslow-based H. T. Winters Co.

The Family Center, at 93 Silver St., will bring four family-centered programs together under one roof, enhancing coordination and expanding access to services.

The renovation is modernizing the 7,600-square-foot facility with trauma-informed spaces for clinical counseling and other services, positioning Maine Children’s Home meet growing demand for mental health support.

The new space will increase capacity, allowing the organization to serve more clients and hire additional clinicians. Maine Children’s Home annually serves close to 3,000 people of all ages. The nonprofit was founded in 1899 to help build and strengthen families and children throughout the state.

The renovation of the 60-year-old building is supported in part by $525,000 in federal funding secured by U.S. Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, approved in 2023.

Services relocating to the Lunder Building will include the Journey Program, which provides mentorship and guidance to young parents, along with the Family Adoption Program, which offers adoption placement services, education and support to individuals exploring adoption, adoptive families and birth parents.

Also relocating will be the Family Counseling Center, which delivers mental health counseling services to individuals of all ages, and Targeted Case Management, which supports families in navigating resources for children with behavioral health needs, intellectual disabilities or significant medical conditions.

The Maine Children’s Home campus consists of six buildings, with the Lunder Building at its center. The current administration building will also be updated, as a new welcome center.

Waterville’s own A.E. Hodsdon Consulting Engineers was the architect on the renovation. A grand opening is planned for September.
