There’s more bad news for a Waterville manufacturer that produces compostable packaging for Chipotle Mexican Grille, as the company announced an additional 30 temporary layoffs as demand continues to dwindle.
On Monday, Huhtamaki announced the additional layoffs were due to many changes, including reduced demand from a number of its customers that include Chipotle, according to The Bangor Daily News. In addition to producing compostable packaging for the national fast-casual food chain, the Waterville plant produces packaging for many other clients, including several school districts across the country.
Chipotle has been the source of outbreaks of E. coli, Salmonella and norovirus, causing its customer demand to slow. The company plans a day-long shutdown of all its locations to review its practices.
