People’s United Financial Inc., in Bridgeport, Conn., today said it has completed the $1.67 billion acquisition of Burlington, Vt.-based Chittenden Corp., the parent company of six New England banks including Maine Bank & Trust in Portland and Merrill Merchants Bank in Bangor.
As subsidiaries of People’s United, the six banks will continue to operate under their existing names, according to a press release.
