Cianbro wins $54M contract for Bangor bridge and road projects

Pittsfield-based Cianbro Corp. has been selected to replace three overpasses along I-95 in Bangor — a project valued at $54 million.

Starting April 6, the Maine Department of Transportation will begin preparing the median between I-95’s northbound and southbound lanes.

The project is part of a long-term undertaking to replace the two I-95 bridges over Stillwater Avenue with a single-span bridge. A median cross-over utilizing the new northbound alignment will be put in place to maintain through-traffic during construction.

MDOT says some traffic delays will be necessary, but no extended detours will be required. There will be periodic short-term closures of Stillwater Avenue and Exit 186 ramps requiring detours. Access to businesses and the pedestrian pathway will be consistently maintained.

The Kenduskeag Avenue Bridge will be replaced with a shorter, higher-clearance span, with work starting in 2027. The bridge will be fully closed to shorten the duration of the construction time — an eight-month detour is anticipated. The work is expected to be completed in 2029.

Traffic updates will be available through the MaineDOT Facebook page and message signs on the roadways.

Cianbro is Maine’s largest construction company, with $1.3 billion in revenue in 2025.
