The United States Senate yesterday approved the nomination of Peter Cianchette, a South Portland businessman and former Maine legislator, as the United States’ ambassador to Costa Rica, according to a press release from Senator Olympia Snowe’s office.
Cianchette served in the Maine Legislature from 1996 to 2000, was the 2002 Republican nominee for governor and chaired the Bush-Cheney re-election campaign in Maine in 2004, according to the release and to the Morning Sentinel in Waterville. President George W. Bush nominated Cianchette for the position in February.
