Central Maine Power Co. is offering voluntary early retirement packages to some employees, while the union representing workers says layoffs are looming.
The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers told news channel WGME 13 that CMP announced it was planning layoffs, less than a month after the union agreed on a new four-year contract. Union representatives said the layoffs are in addition to 141 meter readers they claim will be laid off after CMP transitions to automated readers, and that CMP is planning layoffs to increase its profit margin.
CMP did not comment on whether these layoffs will occur, but did say it’s offering early retirement packages to some employees. The company did not specify how many workers it hopes will take the offer or why it’s offering them, according to WGME.
