Portland-based Coffee By Design has started construction on a 40,000-square-foot expansion to expand production for the company’s wholesale operation and open a fourth downtown retail location.
The Portland Press Herald reported the new East Bayside roastery, retail store and offices will allow the company to quadruple its roasting capacity from 500,000 pounds to 2 million pounds a year. Owners Alan Spear and Mary Allen Lindemann told the paper the expansion accommodates the company’s wholesale business, which grew by 25% last year.
The paper reported that the company has over 300 wholesale clients, 75% of which are in Maine. Last year, the company recorded over $6 million in gross revenues.
The company’s new building at 11 Diamond St.will also host roastery tours, have training space for baristas and a showroom for coffee equipment.
