Construction starts on Lumbermen’s Museum in Greenville

Construction is underway on a new building that will become the home of the Lumberman’s Museum.

The Moosehead Historical Society is building the facility to provide more space to preserve and tell the story of the region’s forest industry.

The building, located at 444 Pritham Ave, will be known as the Jewett Family Building.

Sean Billings, who is president of the Moosehead Historical Society, said the project is a major opportunity for both the museum and Greenville.

“This is an amazing opportunity not just for the historical society but for the town of Greenville, too,” said Billings. “A million-dollar building here is a game changer for this town.”

The construction project is being partially funded by Ed and Arlene Jewett, who are covering the exterior. The historical society will raise money to finish the project.

Ed Jewett, who founded Jewett Construction in 1972, is serving as general contractor. Several contractors throughout the area will be involved.

“This gift gives us the opportunity to tell one of the most important stories in the Moosehead region — the story of the forest, the lake, and the people whose work helped build these communities,” said historical society Executive Director Luke Muzzy. “The forest economy is not just our past. It is still part of who we are today. The Jewett Family Building will allow us to preserve that heritage properly and share it with future generations.”
