Court tells EPA to change mercury rules

Maine and a dozen other states got a big win in federal court Friday after arguing for stricter controls over mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants.

The U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., agreed that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2005 rules governing mercury pollution from such power plants was in violation of the federal Clean Air Act.

The rules, which allowed power plants to buy pollution credits in lieu of making costly upgrades, replaced more stringent mercury rules put in place in 2000, according to the Associated Press.
