The state has inked a five-year lease extension for Crescent Beach State Park in Cape Elizabeth, following months of speculation over the fate of the park.
The state announced in a press release Friday that it has reached a new $100,000-per-year lease for 100 acres that abuts state-owned land and that includes around 1,000 feet of beach land and other amenities.
Negotiations between the state and the Sprague Corp. over that property began in 2010, when a 50-year lease deal expired.
In August of last year, the Maine State Employees Association launched a campaign to keep the beach in the state’s park system, as it generates a large portion of daily revenue for the state’s park system.
The Portland Press Herald reported the beach is one of the most popular state parks, drawing around 110,000 people a year.
