Cruise ship rule may hurt Maine ports

A proposed tweak to federal cruise industry rules would have a potentially damaging effect on Maine ports.

Under current federal rules, foreign cruise ships must make a foreign port of call before landing at a U.S. port. The rule change would extend to 48 hours the amount of time ships must spend in a foreign port.

That potential change has alarmed some in the cruise industry, who say those longer visits mean less time for those ships to spend in U.S. ports, according to the Associated Press. For instance, ships that made token stops in Canada before heading to Maine may spend more time in Canada.
