Damariscotta’s Maine Coast Book Shop & Cafe sold

The owner of the Sherman’s Maine Books & Stationery, with five locations along the coast, is buying the Maine Coast Book Shop & Cafe in Damariscotta.

Sherman’s, the oldest independent bookstore in the state of Maine, has stores in Bar Harbor, Boothbay Harbor, Camden, Freeport and Portland.

Maine Coast Book Shop & Cafe’s current owners, Susan and Barnaby Porter, who announced this spring that they would be selling the store, will continue running it through this year, and Sherman’s owner Jeff Curtis will take over operations Jan. 1, the Bangor Daily News reported. The book shop dates to 1964.

Curtis, who declined to disclose the sale price of the business, told the BDN that he plans to retain all existing staff and not make any significant changes to the store.
