The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected a July request from mapmaker DeLorme for a hearing on a $6.2 million fine assessed against it by the U.S. International Trade Commission last year.
The Portland Press Herald said DeLorme had hoped to challenge the fine that was imposed after a patent infringement case that predated its acquisition by Swiss GPS giant Garmin earlier this year.
An earlier Bangor Daily News story said the violation stemmed from a complaint filed by Virginia-based BriarTek Inc., claiming that an imported belt clip used with DeLorme’s InReach two-way satellite communication device infringed on part of a patent for BrairTek’s own satellite communication system.
The Press Herald said DeLorme had been embroiled in the patent dispute with BriarTek for four years.
The Supreme Court grants a full review and oral arguments to only about 1% filed annually, the Press Herald said.
