The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has stopped imposing surcharges on gasoline and other petroleum products that it estimates will save customers $5.5 million this year.
The Associated Press reported that improved fiscal management at the DEP allowed it to stop a 20-cent-per-barrel surcharge on gasoline and a 10-cent surcharge on barrels of other petroleum products, including heating oil.
The surcharge helped boost a DEP fund used to clean up oil discharges from storage tanks.
