Supporters of the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol are declaring victory on Question 1, which triggers a number of recently approved moratoriums in Maine municipalities banning recreational marijuana retail shops and social clubs.
“Let’s see. It’s 2 in the morning and we’re up by a point with 85% reported. We’re trying to be really cautious but we’re still hopeful,” political director Alysia Melnick told Maine Public. “We’ve been up all night and we think we will win the day but we just want to be tempered in our response.”
Less than an hour later, the Bangor Daily News called the vote in favor of Question 1, which allows adults over the age of 21 to grow their own plants and possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana, according to Maine Public.
Question 1 also allows marijuana to be sold, regulated and taxed at a 10% rate, according to Maine Public.
Now, a number of moratoriums on retail marijuana establishments will be instituted in communities including Bangor, Brewer, Saco and Westbrook. Portland city officials will take up a possible moratorium at their next City Council meeting, according to the Bangor Daily News.
