After five months in business, South Portland's Barkery Dog Bar has closed its doors.
The business posted on social media that it ceased operations effective June 22.
"With incredibly heavy hearts, we are sharing that the Barkery Dog Bar is closed," the owners said in a statement on Facebook. "This is not the ending we hoped for, and it is not a decision we made lightly. It took nearly two years to bring the Barkery to life, and saying goodbye to this dream is deeply painful."
The venue was based at 180 Waterman Drive.
The post did not disclose a specific reason for the closure but acknowledged that the announcement would likely prompt questions from the community.
"We know this news will bring questions, emotions and opinions," said the post. "We only ask for kindness."
The owners noted that the decision has affected employees, owners, partners, vendors, lenders, guests and families, describing the circumstances surrounding the closure as "complicated and deeply personal."
"You never know what someone is carrying or how they are handling the stress behind the scenes."
As reported in Mainebiz this past March, the Barkery offered dog owners a way to socialize, eat and drink while their pets played in a supervised indoor off-leash environment. During its brief run, the business hosted community events and partnered with local organizations and animal welfare groups.
The owners said their immediate priority is helping employees find new opportunities. They are asking community members to share job openings that could help their staff.
