Dollar Tree buying Family Dollar for $8.5B

The Dollar Tree discount store chain is planning to purchase Family Dollar Stores Inc. for approximately $8.5 billion, which would make it the nation’s largest discount retail chain.

Reuters reported that Dollar Tree’s offer was approved by Family Dollar’s board on Monday, prompting stocks to go up for both companies shortly after.

Family Dollar currently has more than 20 stores in Maine, with more planned in the Lewiston-Auburn area. Dollar Tree runs approximately 16 stores in the state.
