The Dover Bridge over the Piscataquis River on Essex Street in Dover-Foxcroft will be closed starting March 25.
The Maine Department of Transportation said the 96-year-old bridge needs to be replaced and the crossing will be shut down to traffic until Dec. 1, 2027.
The $10.6 million project is federally funded. Wyman & Simpson of Richmond is the contractor.
The MDOT said the bridge deck is in serious condition, and the superstructure and substructure are both in poor condition.
Crews will be working on replacing the bridge as well as 120 feet of approach work on each end, from the intersection of Essex and River streets to the intersection of Essex and Lincoln streets.
This full project is expected to be completed by November 2028.
