The Port of Eastport will get a $6 million federal grant to replace its breakwater, which protects the port from damage by waves.
U.S. Sen. Susan Collins said in a press release that the port’s breakwater is failing, allowing wave action to damage the deepwater commercial port that she said is important to economic development in Washington County.
In 2012, the port handled 411,561 metric tons of cargo, generating revenues of $1.63 million and a profit of $250,000. The cargo through the port is primarily wood pulp and dairy cows.
The latest grant comes through the national Transportation Investments Generating Economic Recovery, or TIGER, program.
