The Maine Maritime Museum awarded the Icelandic-based shipping company Eimskip USA the 11th annual Mariners Award for its contribution to Maine’s maritime heritage and its impact of the economy and culture of the state.
Although the shipping company is based in Iceland, the company decided in 2013 to make Portland it’s only port of all in the United States.
According to the Bath-based museum, Eimskip’s role in assisting Maine in becoming an active member of the multinational Arctic Council, the leading intergovernmental forum for the discussion of sustainable development, environmental protection and other issues in the Arctic, contributed to the shipping company receiving the award.
This fall Portland will host the first Arctic Council forum in the United States outside of Alaska.
Richard d’Abo, chairman of the board of Eimskip, will also deliver the keynote address at the 2016 Mainebiz Momentum Convention on Nov. 9 at the Augusta Civic Center.
