In response to the state’s growing shortage of nurses, Bangor-based Eastern Maine Community College is expanding its associate degree program in nursing to the Katahdin region.
EMCC will offer coursework through the Katahdin Higher Education Center in East Millinocket, with clinical training at Millinocket Regional Hospital and other local health care sites, according to a news release Tuesday.
The number of nursing vacancies is projected to grow to 3,200 by 2025 as the size of Maine’s service-dependent, aging population grows by more than one-third in the next decade, according to EMCC.
The college will hold an informational session about the nursing program expansion on Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 4-6 p.m., at 1 Dirigo Drive, East Millinocket. More information can also be found at the EMCC website.
Fall semester classes begin on Aug. 26.
