Eastern Maine Development Corp. has received $2.1 million in stimulus funds to launch a green construction skills training program that could train over 100 people.
The $2,109,088 grant from U.S. Department of Labor will set up a program to offer the National Center for Construction Education and Research curriculum that teaches workers about green building and retrofitting, according to a press release from Rep. Mike Michaud’s office. EMDC will partner with other entities to run the program, including Eastern Maine Community College, MaineHousing, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1253 and United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 716.
EMDC is hoping to put 105 participants through the program, and that 90 participants will be placed into unsubsidized employment, according to the release. Seven energy-efficient replacement homes will be built in the region as part of the program.
