New leader to take helm at ‘pivotal time’ for environmental nonprofit

Justin Strasburger will take the helm at the Natural Resources Council of Maine as executive director on Monday, April 13. He succeeds interim leader Todd Garth.

Strasburger brings nearly two decades of nonprofit leadership to the role. He most recently served as executive director of Brunswick-based Full Plates Full Potential, where he oversaw strategic growth and efforts to secure passage of a food security measure signed into law last month.

He serves as board president of the Maine Association of Nonprofits and previously was the development committee chair at Teens to Trails, a Brunswick-based nonprofit that connects young Mainers to life-changing outdoor experiences.

The National Resources Council of Maine, based in Augusta, is the state’s leading nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to protecting, restoring and conserving Maine’s environment.

“Like NRCM’s members and supporters, I have a profound love for the state’s pristine resources — its forests, mountains and waterways — and also a fierce determination to protect them,” Strasburger said.

“I look forward to utilizing my strategic leadership, proven fundraising acumen and complex advocacy experience to advance our shared mission of protecting the nature of Maine,” he added.

The Natural Resources Council has total revenue of $4.4 million, according to the 2025 Mainebiz Giving Guide, which sourced figures from GuideStar by Candid as of July 28, 2025, based on the most recent information available.

‘Pivotal time’

Lucy Abbott, who chairs the group’s board, touted Strasburger’s extensive experience in nonprofit leadership, coalition building and organizational management, as well as his deep ties to Maine and commitment to mission-driven work.

“Throughout the search, the board was looking for a leader who can guide NRCM forward at this pivotal time, bringing a clear sense of moral purpose and strong understanding of the essential role nonprofits play in civic life,” Abbott said. “Justin brings the skills and approach needed to do that.”
