EPA grants to track development impacts

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and the University of Maine in Orono have received $550,000 from the federal Environmental Protection Agency for programs to track the environmental impacts of land development.

Maine DIFW will use $250,000 to track land development from 2004 to 2008 to aid local planning officials and land trusts, according to a press release. UMaine will receive $300,000 to employ tools to track and anticipate residential developments, and then measure the impacts of these developments on lake ecosystems.

In total, the EPA awarded $3 million of grants to 10 cities and universities to pursue “green building and smart growth” under its Collaborative Science and Technology Network for Sustainability program.
