Ethanol-blended fuel is being widely introduced in southern Maine this month after a major Portland Harbor supplier began mixing its gasoline with 10% ethanol.
The Gulf Oil LP terminal in South Portland is supplying E10 fuel to its area Gulf and Exxon gas stations, according to the Portland Press Herald. E10 is a gasoline containing 10% ethanol, which is derived mostly from corn and burns cleaner than regular gasoline, though it also contains less energy and reduces average gas mileage.
Ethanol-blended gas is less expensive than regular gas, and qualifies for federal subsidies amounting to five cents per gallon for companies that create and sell the fuel, the paper reported.
