Fairchild profits up

Fairchild Semiconductor’s yesterday reported profits of $17.1 million in the first quarter of 2008, up from $6.3 million a year ago.

Sales for the South Portland-based chip-maker rose to $406.3 million, a one-percent increase over last year. The sales increase was in line with CEO Mark Thompson’s expectations, except for slower sales in China in February, according to a press release.

The company expects revenue in the next quarter to rise by 3% at most because of consumer demand.
