The Maine Public Utilities Commission is recommending FairPoint Communications Inc. pay a $500,000 fine for failing to meet quality standards for its landline customers.
According to the Bangor Daily News, the PUC’s report says that FairPoint’s claims that weather and cyber attacks preventing the company reaching service standards were invalid. Instead, the report says the company prioritized unregulated services like high-speed broadband, the BDN reported.
For its part, FairPoint says that the quality standards for services like landline are too high.
The PUC dismisses this claim as well within its report, according to the BDN.
“FairPoint’s only argument against the imposition of penalties for poor service quality appears to be the company’s disagreement with the Legislature’s establishment of service quality metrics, and the commission’s establishment of the service quality benchmarks.”
