FairPoint to expand broadband in 44 towns

FairPoint Communications plans to expand and upgrade broadband service in 44 Maine towns that are unserved or have low-speed access, over the next three years.

In a press release, FairPoint said it will upgrade service in multiple neighborhoods. The company’s announcement comes after the Maine Public Utilities Commission in mid-August loosened requirements for the company to build out its broadband network in rural areas of the state.

That agreement requires the company to extend broadband service to 85% of its customers by next August and to 87% of its customers by April of 2014.

The company said it will use around $1 million from the Federal Communications Commission’s Connect America Fund to locations that qualify for that program — around one-third of the total project.
