Farmers in the Wells and York area are getting a boost from a new farm-to-hospital initiative at York Hospital.
The Bangor Daily News reported that the hospital’s food services director, Jorge Descarte, began sourcing local farm products a year ago and expanded the initiative this year. Descarte visits the farmers, reviews the harvest schedule and considers trends in food, gluten-free and vegan options, and the dietary needs of patients and visitors.
“It’s important when people are ill that they eat to get well and it’s been our long-time priority to feed them high quality, fresh food,” Leisa Smith, lead clinical dietician, told the BDN.
