Father-and-son team launches boutique wealth management firm

Jack Zinn and his son Jack Zinn III launched a boutique wealth management firm in a 1,616-square-foot office space in Portland’s East End.

Zinn Wealth Management leased Suite A in a building called the Mason Block at 62 India St. from landlord 62 India LLC.

Noah Stebbins of the Boulos Co. represented the Zinns and Peter Harrington of Malone Commercial Brokers represented the landlord.

The building was completed in 2018, but given the historic neighborhood still has a “new” feel to it.

“It’s a brand-new building, very modern, very nice,” said Jack Zinn III.

The 54,000-square-foot Mason Block is a residential and retail building developed by Reger Dasco Properties and completed in 2018.

The street-level office space leased by the Zinns includes two conference rooms, private offices, open work area, kitchen and private bathroom, with floor-to-ceiling windows and natural light. It was marketed as being in a great location and visible in a high foot traffic area near shops, retail, office and residential condos.

Jack Zinn was a partner and third owner for six years with Back Cove Financial in Falmouth.

Jack Zinn III joined Back Cove two years ago. Previously, he was an advisor at Merrill Lynch in Portland.

“For the last couple of years we’ve been working as a team and decided to break out on our own a couple of months ago,” said the younger Zinn.

Goals include providing a higher degree of personal service, and custom planning particularly given the complexities of the field, he said.

The independent financial advisor model utilizes an outside practice management firm called Commonwealth Financial Network that allowed the transition from Back Cove to be seamless.

“We have all of the same back office infrastructure we had with our prior office and we have all of our own clients,” said Zinn. “So none of our clients had to transfer their accounts and we had zero interruptions.”

Zinn Wealth Management advises about 150 families, mostly based in Maine or having a Maine connection. It also works with corporate retirement plans in Maine and around New England.

Services include estate, retirement, financial, tax and college planning, as well as asset management and risk management.

Clients are looking for customized solutions, Zinn said.

“Clients want an advisor they can trust and someone who has their back,” he said. “They really want to work with experienced advisors who are proactive and accessible, keeping in touch with them in good times and bad.”
