The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $4.5 million in grants to the Maine Department of Transportation for statewide infrastructure improvements.
Maine DOT will receive $4.58 million in Federal Highway Administration funds for 11 projects around the state, according to a press release from the U.S. DOT. The projects named yesterday are in addition to the $1.2 million announced last week that will help pay for work at I-95 exit 113 to accommodate a new MaineGeneral Medical Center hospital.
Other projects receiving funds are:
- Houlton: $1.15 million to reconstruct a 1.1-mile portion of Currier Road between Houlton and Littleton
- Rockland: $810,000 for improvements at the ferry boat terminal
- Portland: $475,000 to improve vessel access and passenger safety at the Portland terminal
- Maine State Ferry service fleet: $395,000 to provide the fleet with modern electronic equipment
- Turner: $210,000 to replace Ricker’s Bridge
- Maine DOT: $101,268 in non-discretionary funding to help the department compete for federal highway contracts
- St. John’s Valley: $84,000 for signs along a 92-mile route in Aroostook County identifying cultural and historic sites
- Hancock and Washington counties: $80,000 to help develop the Bold Coast Scenic Byway Corridor Management Plan, which will document the cultural, natural and historic features along routes 1, 187, 191, 189 and 190
- Fryeburg: $60,000 to rehabilitate, repair and preserve the Hemlock Covered Bridge
- Acadia National Park: $25,200 to add informational signage around Acadia National Park promoting tourism and recreational opportunities
- Hancock County: $17,600 to design and install new signage along routes 1 and 186 in Hancock County to promote tourism along the Schoodic National Scenic Byway
