A Rockport dentist is facing a lawsuit from the federal government over allegations that he submitted fraudulent bills for MaineCare reimbursement.
The Bangor Daily News reported that the civil lawsuit against Daniel P. Schecter was filed in U.S. District Court in Bangor on Wednesday. Schecter is not facing criminal charges.
The lawsuit alleges that 50 claims filed by Schecter between Jan. 1, 2009, and Dec. 31, 2011, were not found to be eligible for MaineCare reimbursement because the procedures weren’t medically necessary. The lawsuit seeks to have Schecter repay an unspecified amount of funds, plus $5,500 to $11,000 in civil penalties for each false claim.
Separately, Schecter has faced disciplinary action from the Maine Board of Dental Examiners twice.
