First Wind comes online

The $60 million Stetson Wind project went online yesterday in northern Washington County. It is now New England’s largest wind farm and makes Maine the region’s leading wind power state. At maximum output, the 38 turbines can produce more than 167 million kilowatt hours annually of electricity – enough to power about 23,500 homes per year, according to the company’s website.

First Wind also operates the 28-megawatt Mars Hill wind farm. At an event yesterday, Gov. John Baldacci said the two wind farms are the cornerstone of the state’s development of a powerful alternative energy industry.

Your article should have mentioned two related things. First, a hearty group from Friends of Lincoln Lakes, including people from Mars Hill, Danforth, and Prentiss, braved the mid-January cold to protest the commissioning of this facility. Second, you should have mentioned that “Stetson II”, which will add turbines by devastating the two mountains to the north of Stetson Mt. are being rammed through permitting by LURC without providing a public hearing. Lack of any public hearing was one os the reasons for the protest.
