Five companies in play for $50K ‘LaunchPad’ grant

Five finalists have been named in the Gorham Savings Bank “LaunchPad” competition, including several that have been featured on the pages of Mainebiz.

The winner, which will be selected in June from 179 applicants, will be awarded $50,000.

Finalists are: Blue Ox Malthouse, Lisbon Falls; Fluid Farms Aquaponic Produce, Portland; Garbage to Garden, Portland; Good To-Go, Kittery; and UniteGPS, Portland.

A live pitch competition will be held June 7 at Hannaford Hall at the University of Southern Maine. The winner will be selected from that pitch competition.

Judges will be WEX President and CEO Melissa Smith, Winxnet CEO and co-founder Chris Claudio and the director of SMCC’s Entrepreneurial Center, Michelle Neujahr.

The LaunchPad competition is in its fourth year, but this year the grant award was raised to $50,000 from $30,000.

“Maine’s economy is made up of thousands of small and innovative businesses, and we want to see those numbers grow and more businesses succeed” Chris Emmons, president and CEO of Gorham Savings Bank, said in a prepared statement. “We’re constantly inspired by the success stories we hear from entrepreneurs, and we’re looking forward to giving another one a meaningful boost this year.”
