A former 7-Eleven in South Portland has been listed for $650,000 as Seven & i Holdings, the Japanese company that owns the Slurpees-to-fuel convenience store chain, seeks to reposition its retail network.
The store, located at 684 Main St. close to Interstate 295 and I-95, is in a busy retail and restaurant area that includes the Maine Mall as well as Aroma Joe’s, Coppersmith Tavern, Indy’s Sandwich and Dunkin’.
The property, which includes a 1,936 square-foot building on a 0.29-acre lot, was listed by Malone Commercial Brokers in June. The listing notes that plans are available for an 800-square-foot addition.
Peter Harrington, the listing broker, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Store realignment
The listing comes as the parent company seeks to update its retail portfolio.
In a presentation of first-quarter results last week, the company announced plans to close 200 unprofitable stores in fiscal year 2026 and remodel another 200, starting in the second half of the year.
The company is also in the process of converting dozens of stores from corporate to franchise models to drive higher sales and margins.
“Our key initiatives are generally progressing steadily, including efforts to optimize our store network,” the company said in its presentation.
Seven & i Holdings also upgraded its full-year financial outlook, citing a stronger-than-expected operating performance.
“In North America, we’re accelerating the North Star plan by strengthening our merchandise offering, modernizing and optimizing our store network and enhancing customer experience to better meet our customers’ needs and strengthen our business for the long haul,” said Steve Dacus, the company’s president and CEO.
“We’re focused on executing our strategy, investing in the opportunities that create the greatest value for our customers and building the capabilities that will support our long-term growth,” he added.
The company operates roughly 85,000 7-Eleven stores worldwide across 20 countries, making it the world’s largest convenience store chain. In the U.S. alone, it has more than 13,000 locations.
In Maine, there are 7-Eleven stores in Portland, Gorham, Biddeford, Springvale, Lewiston, Kittery and Old Orchard Beach.
