Gov. Paul LePage has named former U.S. Rep. David Emery to lead efforts to reform state government.
Emery, a Republican who represented Maine in Congress from 1975 to 1983, has been named a deputy commissioner in the Department of Administrative and Financial Services, according to MaineToday Media. Emery will oversee the transition of the Maine State Planning Office into an administrative office focused on policy or program management. Emery told the news site that the revamped office will be like a think tank for the administration, where ideas on government structure and reform will be explored.
Emery, who unsuccessfully ran for U.S. Senate in 1982 and Maine governor in 2006, has also worked as deputy director of the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, and founded a public opinion firm called Scientific Marketing & Analysis.
