Free Caribou workshop will teach basics of international trade

The Northern Maine Development Commission will hold a workshop in Caribou Nov. 6 for companies, economic development officials and businesspeople to learn the basics of exporting and how the Maine International Trade Center can help.

The free workshop, led by MITC international trade specialist Thomas Conley, will cover topics including:

  • Identifying potential international markets, beginning with Canada, Maine’s largest trade partner;
  • Developing a market entry strategy;
  • Required export documentation and governing agencies;
  • Funding for international business growth; and
  • Government assistance programs for exporters.

“We are excited to offer a program that can bring additional opportunities to our area businesses” said NMDC Executive Director Robert Clark in a news release. “Developing new clients and contacts just across the border can be lucrative for local businesses and will stimulate business growth.”

Last year, 2,087 Maine companies exported $2.8 billion in goods and services to 169 countries.

The workshop is free and is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 6, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the NMDC office, 11 West Presque Isle Road, Caribou.
