Café Luna, a locally owned cafe known for its specialty drinks, smoothie bowls and made-to-order sandwiches, is moving to a larger location within Scarborough.
The café, which opened in 2023, will relocate its Scarborough cafe location at 370 U.S. Route 1 to the Downs Town Center, becoming the first restaurant to open in the district's newest mixed-use building, the Breakaway.
A moving date has not been set. Café Luna will remain open until it relocates to the Downs.
The move will give Café Luna more space and additional parking.
“Our loyal customers have carried us to this growth point where we need more space to accommodate their needs,” said Juliann Joy, owner of Café Luna. “We are very excited to remain in Scarborough, and we very enthusiastically look forward to the future at the Downs."
In 2025, the business expanded beyond its original location, with a Falmouth location.
About the building
Café Luna's arrival marks another milestone in the ongoing transformation of the Downs, a mixed-use development that has added more than 700 housing units and nearly 1 million square feet of nonresidential space since 2018. The development is home to more than 50 businesses, including Allagash Brewing, Costco, IDEXX and Market Basket.
The new location will occupy the ground floor of the Breakaway, a five-story building that is under construction in the center of the Downs development. The project will also feature retail space on the street level and 76 apartments on the four floors above.
The Breakaway is the first commercial building in the Town Center designed to accommodate smaller local and regional businesses. The building's name pays tribute to Scarborough's longtime association with harness racing.
“Creating opportunities for businesses to grow and expand without leaving the state has always been part of our vision," said Peter Michaud, managing director of M&R Development. "As the Town Center continues to take shape, we remain committed to cultivating a thoughtful mix of retailers, restaurants, and services that reflect the character of Maine and create a place that truly feels like home."
The Breakaway and two additional retail buildings are expected to open in spring 2027. Several more business announcements will be made later this summer, according to M&R Development.
