Health care, shipbuilding construction projects in works
Maine Coast Construction of Camden will build the planned Building 6 at Front Street Shipyard in Belfast. John Hansen of South Thomaston is the architect. The 22,500-square-foot building will accommodate large yacht refits and commercial vessel construction.
Ouellet Construction of Brunswick is building the multipurpose center at All Saints Parish in Brunswick. Other contractors include Nate Libby Masonry, Novel Iron Works, Ray Labbe & Sons and Al's Plumbing. The designer is Scott Simons Architects.
Herbert Construction of Lewiston is managing construction of a 39,800-square-foot facility in Damariscotta for LincolnHealth / MaineHealth. It will house provider practices and consultation space for a dietician, pharmacist, social worker and other professionals. There will be community room for both the public and staff use. The designer is E4H Environments for Health Architecture.
AlliedCook Construction of Scarborough completed the Residences at Eliot Commons, an affordable senior housing facility in Eliot. It was developed by David Bateman and is owned by Fred Forsley. The site was developed in a TIF district, aiding the financing aspect.
Industry outreach
MaineWorks, which provides labor for construction companies, is a B Corp-certified employment agency. Recently it launched a nonprofit partner organization, the Maine Recovery Fund, to provide community support to people in recovery that are trying to re-enter the workforce. MaineWorks provides the job, while MRF provides the funding, knowledge, relationships and training that bridge the gap between hopelessness and resiliency.
People on the move
GZA GeoEnvironmental Inc., an environmental and geotechnical consulting firm, promoted Gary R. McAllister to principal. The Wells resident is in GZA's Portland office. He has 28 years of geotechnical and civil engineering experience, from conceptual planning through construction and has been with GZA since 2006. He leads the company's power, oil and gas sector. GZA is based in Norwood, Mass., and has 650 employees.
Recognition
Whitten Architects in Portland received the Merit Award for Excellence in Architecture from the American Institute of Architects. The citation was for its Family Farmhouse project in Brunswick. Jessie Carroll, an associate principal, was the project leader. “It's a tremendous honor for me to accept this award on behalf of my work at Whitten,” says Carroll, who has been at Whitten since 2013. “The Family Farmhouse is just one great example of the meaningful projects we are lucky enough to be part of in Maine and beyond.” Carroll is a licensed architect in Maine and an adjunct faculty member at University of Maine Augusta, and on the AIA Maine Board of Directors.
