Hebert Construction is taking advantage of the so-far mild winter to make good progress on the Furman Block, at 100 Parris St. in Portland.
Szanton Co. of Portland plans 46 one-bedroom units and five studios. The site will be age-restricted, 55 and older, and the project will have options for a range of income levels. It’s on the former city maintenance depot site, which was sold to various developers.
Hebert Construction is working from plans by Archetype Architects. An opening of December 2020 is planned. Elsewhere, Szanton and Hebert are also winding up work on 48 Hampshire St. in Auburn, with 53 units. A spring opening is planned.
News and notes from the industry
PM Construction Co. of Saco is overseeing construction of a 45,000-square-foot addition to the Cedars retirement community in Portland. The site will include assisted living as well as 60 resident rooms. Elsewhere, PM is managing the large-scale renovation of the historic Vickery building on Water Street in Augusta, creating 23 residential units and three retail sites.

Maine Post & Beam continues its expansion in North Yarmouth. Last year, it finished the large barn-like workshop and this year it is finishing up a separate building that will house the company’s offices.
Maguire Construction of Yarmouth has a building going up at 392 Route 1 in Freeport.
Langford & Low Construction of Portland is building the $10 million, 19,000-square-foot medical building for MaineHealth and Western Maine Health. The two-story medical office building is on the Stephens Memorial Hospital campus in Norway. The building is under construction on the hospital’s Main Street grounds. It will open by the end of the year. Portland-based SMRT handled the design.
Reed & Reed of Woolwich is replacing two bridges in Gardiner, the Maine Street Bridge and the aptly named Bridge Street Bridge.
American Aerial Services Inc. has cranes on site at 40 Free St. in Portland, putting up steel framework for a condo building being developed by J.B. Brown & Sons. Allied/Cook Construction is managing the project.
