Thos. Moser plans to open a showroom later this year at 146 Middle St., leasing the 2,787-square-foot space from property owner Peggy Greenhut Golden, whose gallery occupied the location for 49 years before announcing earlier this year that it would move.
Greenhut Galleries plans to move from Middle Street in Portland to 71 Cove St., joining its sister gallery, Cove Street Arts, in the East Bayside neighborhood.
“Thos. Moser's work reflects a deep respect for materials, design and the people who make it,” said Golden. “Their commitment to making furniture by hand and their thoughtful approach to design make them a natural fit for this space."
The move will bring the furniture manufacturer back to Portland for the first time in years and eventually replace its showroom in Freeport, which is expected to close later this year.
The Auburn-based company first opened a Portland showroom in 1984 at 415 Cumberland Ave. It later shifted its retail presence, opening its Freeport showroom in 1998.
“Portland has long been an important part of our story," said Philip Hussey, CEO of Thos. Moser. "We're looking forward to being part of the community again and creating a place where customers can experience our furniture firsthand.”
The showroom will feature the company's furniture collections and serve as its primary retail location.
Additional details, including an opening date, are expected to be announced in the coming months.
