Grant earmarked for Katahdin workers

Funds to help laid-off Millinocket paperworkers is on its way from Washington.

U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud this morning announced that the U.S. Department of Labor will award a $527,000 National Emergency Grant to Maine to assist the roughly 208 workers Katahdin Paper Co. in September laid off from its Millinocket mill.

The money will help workers get skills assessments, training and career counseling. Supplement services are already being offered through Trade Adjustment Assistance, according to a statement.
