Greater Portland Landmarks is seeking a new executive director to succeed Hilary Bassett when she retires next June after 18 years in that role.
The nonprofit group, set up to preserve and revitalize historic buildings, neighborhoods, landmarks and parks, said in a news release that it is is seeking a leader with a passion for historic preservation.
Equally important are records of success in fundraising, management and the ability to establish effective relationships with public officials, diverse community stakeholders and citizens, it said in an announcement.
Applications are due by Jan. 30.
Ed Gardner, Greater Portland Landmarks’ board president, said the organization will begin an intensive nationwide search early next year.
“We’ll be looking for a strong executive,” he said in a statement. “He or she will be able to bring people together and help the community reach the right decisions to preserve what makes our place so special.”
Greater Portland Landmarks was founded in 1964 in reaction to urban renewal and the demolition of Union Station.
Besides conducting programs in public education, research and advocacy to identify and revitalize the city’s distinctive buildings and landscape, Greater Portland Landmarks manages the Portland Observatory on Munjoy Hill and owns the historic Safford House on High Street.
