The owner of Lessard Bros. Construction in Greene is being held in contempt of court for not paying a $405,000 fine and failing to correct federal safety violations.
The Portland Press Herald reported that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in Boston issued the civil contempt judgement. The judgement requires Stephen Lessard, a roofing contractor, to pay the fine and prove that he has corrected 11 federal safety violations within 20 days. If he doesn’t act, he could face imprisonment among other possible sanctions.
Lessard told the newspaper that he isn’t able to pay the fine because he doesn’t have enough money, and that he is unable to submit the proof of correction because the violations cited by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration happened at jobs completed several years ago.
