Scientists say the shrimp index measuring the amount of Gulf of Maine shrimp is at its lowest level in nearly three decades, raising the possibility of closing the fishery this winter.
The Associated Press reported regulators plan to survey the latest data in November to decide the dates for the next shrimp fishing season or whether to close the fishery altogether, as recommended by regulators last year.
During the most recent season, regulators cut the fishing quota by 74%.
