Spurling Fitness, a personal training gym focused on adults age 50 and older, is planning to open its fourth Maine location in late August.
Spurling Holdings LLC bought the property at 1100 U.S. Route 1 in York from John E Hawk for $800,000.
Joe Atwood of the Dunham Group and David Burgess of Coldwell Banker/York Realty brokered the sale.
“York has been at the top of our list for a long time,” said Doug Spurling, who founded the company with Josh Williams in 2012.
Former auto dealership
The 2,000-square-foot, one-story building in York, located on 2.17 acres with 50 parking spaces, was a pre-owned auto dealership built in 1996. The seller is the original owner who was ready to retire, according to the listing.
The property was marketed as a high-visibility location with strong year-round traffic that provides consistent customer flow.
In addition to the purchase price, a $180,000 renovation is underway, with the Pshowroom and service bays being turned into a purpose-built training facility, said Spurling, Financing was provided by Kennebunk Savings Bank, facilitated by Becky Jacobs.
Spurling clients train in groups with a maximum 6-to-1 client-to-coach ratio, allowing for personalized coaching, proper form and programming tailored to individual goals, injuries and abilities.
Growing footprint
The York facility will open at the end of August. Ahead of the opening, Spurling Fitness is offering “founding memberships” with certain perks to the first 50 clients in York.
Spurling’s model is to purchase rather than lease locations.
The company’s flagship gym is at 1 Alewive Park Road in Kennebunk. The second location opened at 10 Market St. in Scarborough’s Downs development in 2025.
The third location opened earlier this year at 239 Ocean Ave. in the busy Mill Creek neighborhood of South Portland.
