Scarborough-based Hannaford Supermarkets’ charitable foundation donated a total of $1.16 million in 2025 to nonprofits that support health and education initiatives.
The funding benefits organizations in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York, and reflects the foundation’s ongoing focus on combating food insecurity, supporting learning and workforce readiness and promoting healthier lifestyles.
The donations benefit the following partners in Maine: Fork Food Lab ($25,000), Midcoast Hunger Prevention Program ($25,000), North Berwick Food Pantry ($10,000) and the Roux Institute of Northeastern University ($750,000).
Funding for development of the Roux Institute campus, now under construction in Portland, is designed to help attract talent, drive innovation and strengthen Maine’s workforce —creating opportunities that benefit both individuals and the regional economy.
“At Hannaford, we understand food, health and opportunity are critical to building strong communities,” said Peter Forester, chair of the Hannaford Charitable Foundation board.
“We’re proud to partner with organizations across our footprint that deliver meaningful, lasting impact for our neighbors through better access to healthy food, education and programs that improve health and well-being.”
In 2024, Hannaford donated more than 27.6 million pounds of food to hunger relief organizations and supported approximately 135 community partners across its footprint.
Hannaford Supermarkets operates 188 stores in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York and Vermont and employs nearly 30,000.
The company was founded in 1883, and in 2016 was acquired by Ahold Delhaize USA, a division of the Dutch supermarket conglomerate Ahold Delhaize.
