Two days after the grocery chain Hannaford Bros., in Scarborough, revealed a security breach of its computer system that has left millions of customers exposed to credit card theft, lawyers have leaped to action.
The law firm Berger & Montague in Philadelphia and Samuel W. Lanham Jr., a Bangor attorney, have filed class action lawsuits against Hannaford Bros. Co. in U.S. District Courts in Portland and Bangor, according to the Bangor Daily News.
Berger & Montague filed on behalf of all consumers in the United States whose credit or debit card data was stolen from Hannaford’s computer network, a press release states, and is urging customers to contact its attorneys. The firm alleges Hannaford was negligent for not maintaining adequate computer data security.
Lanham filed a lawsuit on behalf of a customer, Melinda J. Ryan of Bangor, and unnamed others. Ryan has not been a victim of fraud as a result of the security breach, Lanham told the Daily News, but that the lawsuit is seeking compensation for the breach itself.
