Hannaford's sustainable seafood policy

Third-party verification

  • For fresh products: Developed a criteria and evaluation with the Gulf of Maine Research Institute. Focuses on harvesting methods that decrease bycatch, promote distribution methods that decrease food miles and improve handling.
  • For farmed products: Requiring certification by The Global Aquaculture Alliance, an international, nonprofit trade association, and its Best Aquaculture Practices certification standards. Can also meet Aquaculture Stewardship Council or equivalent certifications. In absence of that, they must meet alternative minimum aquaculture guidelines as defined by the company.

Traceability

  • Requires full traceability to the source fishery or farm, and Hannaford must have immediate access to the information

Transparency

  • Policy is reviewed and updated on an annual basis
  • Annual status summarizing goals and actions is released
  • Education material is made available to public in store and through its website
